Anime: Thematic Genres

Another way to classify to anime is using the theme, style or gag that is used as the center of history. Well, we have:

Progressive Anime: animation made with purpose to emulate the original Japanese. Examples: Serial Experiments Lain, Neon Genesis Evangelion, paranoia Agent.





Comedy with parody: animation with a great sense of comedy, which represent scenes or situations similar to those of other animations, similar names are used, they do things similar, etc. Examples: Gintama, Hayate no Gotoku!, Seitokai no Ichizon Baka, to test to Shōkanjū, Sket Dance.



Cyberpunk: The story happens in a world where technological advances take crucial part in the history, along with some degree of disintegration or radical change in the social order. Example: Akira, Ghost in the shell, Battle Angel Alita, Megazone 23, Bubblegum Crisis, Goku Midnight Eye, Cyber City Oedo 808, Accel World, Genocyber, Ergo Proxy.




Ecchi: is the pronunciation of the letter H in Japanese, by presenting situations or erotic naughty carried to the comedy. Example: Golden Boy, Kissxsis, Vandread, To Love-Ru , Sora no Otoshimono. If grossly eroticism, using it in a large part of the scenes, becomes fan service. The difference between these is that the Ecchi uses the erotic scenes moderately.




Gekiga: term used for the anime aimed at an adult audience, but that has nothing to do with the hentai. The term literally means "dramatic images". Example: Ashita no Joe (Jica) Kyojin no Hoshi, Golgo 13, Wicked City, Omohide Poro Poro, success not Haka, School Days



Gore: anime literally bloody. Examples: Elfen Lied, Gantz, Genocyber, Deadman Wonderland, Kara not Kyōkai, Another





Harem: many women are attracted to the same man . Examples: Rosario + Vampire,To Love-Ru , Love Hina, Onegai Twins, Sora no Otoshimono, to Aru Majutsu no Index, School Days


Reverse Harem: many men are attracted to the same woman. Example: Ouran High School Host Club, fruits basket, starry sky, Amnesia, Hanasakeru Seishōnen, Brothers conflict



Hentai ( "perverted" ) :although within Japan is not used the term, but Ero-Anime エロアニメ (erotic animation): anime directed for the elderly. Includes explicit sexual content. Examples: Bible Black, Aki Sora, The Blue Girl.               
                                                                                                                  

Kemono: human animals with traits or vice versa. Example: Black Cat, Inuyasha, Sonic X.





Loli: homosexual or heterosexual romance between underage girls, this can also be seen between a girl and an adult. Examples: kodomo no Jikan. Some become completely yuri.




Mahō Shōjo: magical girl, girl-witch or with magical powers. Examples: Corrector Yui, Sailor Moon, Card Captor Sakura.




Mecha: giant robots. Examples: Macross , Peska Gundam, about Mazinger Z, Neon Genesis Evangelion(biological weapon, a living organism used as a weapon of war, considered as wick), Code Geass, Tengen "Toppa! "Gurren Lagann, Accel World, The Vision of Escaflowne




Meitantei: is a detective story. Examples: Sherlock Holmes, Detective Conan, Death Note, Gosick.




Nekketsu: Kind of manga that abound in the action scenes starring a character exalted that defends values such as friendship and personal triumphs. Example: Dragon Ball, One Piece, bleach, Naruto, Pokemon, Beyblade.




                                       

Post-apocalyptic: the story happens in a devastated world. Example: fist of the North Star,not Jica) Kyojin Shingeki, Highschool of the Dead, Neon Genesis Evangelion



Pshicological Contrast: The history part as a typical comedy or as a beautiful story, but after some event takes a completely different direction and becomes horrific and tragic. Can contain gore. Examples: Higurashi no naku koro ni, puella Magí Madoka Magic, School Days.



Romakome: it is a romantic comedy. Examples: Lovely Complex, School Rumble, Love Hina, Toradora!, Kaichō wa Maid-sama! ,Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, among others.


Sentai: on anime, refers to a group of superheroes. Example: Cyborg 009, Mega Man, Super Sentai.



Shōjo-ai or Yuri: homosexual romance between girls or women. Is the difference between the first of the second in the table of contents, either explicit or not. Examples: shoujo Kakumei Utena, Strawberry Panic, Kannazuki no Miko, Yami to Bōshi to Hon no Tabibito


Shonen-ai or yaoi: homosexual romance between boys or men. Is the difference between the first of the second in the table of contents, either explicit or not. Examples: Gakuen Heaven, Junjou Romantica, Gravitation,Sekaiichi HatsukoiIkoku Irokoi RomantanKoi Suru Boukun" ,Tight-rope' ,Sensitive Pornograph'Maiden Rose' loveless.




Shota: homosexual or heterosexual romance among young children, this can also occur between a minor child and an adult. Examples: Boku no Pico, Papa to kiss in the dark. Some become completely yaoi


Spokon: sports stories. Examples: Slam Dunk, Supercampeones, Initial D, Eyeshield 21, The Prince of Tennis, Chihayafuru, Inazuma Eleven, Inazuma Eleven GO, Inazuma Eleven GO Chrone Stone, Inazuma Eleven GO Galaxy,Kuroko not basketball




Steampunk: The story is based on technological advances to steam. Example: Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Last Exile, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Future Boy Conan.


Fantastic Victorian: The story follows a boy/girl of the 19th century that normally has any relationship with any religious organization or governmental and enfrentant to supernatural energies. Examples: D. Gray-man, Pandora Hearts, Kuroshitsuji.



Historic Victorian: unlike of the fantastic, the story shows us events that occurred in the 19th century, and with a touch of romance or comedy. Examples: Emma, Gankutsuō


Virtual World: In this case the players are within an online game and follow a story that you can go by varying a lot. Examples: .Hack, Accel World, Sword Art Online.


Survival Game: This genus is quite well known and always have enough gore. The stories of this type deal with several characters that for X reason are forced to participate in a game of survival either mantandose between colleagues or teaming up with other people. Examples: Gantz, Mirai Nikki, Btooom!, Deadman Wonderland

Anime: demographic genres

The following shows the genres used exclusively for anime and manga:

Kodomo ( "child" ): anime focused on the audience of children. Examples: Hamtaro, Nichijou, Doraemon, Heidi.






Shōnen ( "boy" ): anime for boys and girls teens or pre-adolescents starring an adolescent boy, which often have magical elements and fighting of all kinds. Examples: Saint Seiya, Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, bleach, fairy tail, Digimon, Beyblade.


  Shōjo ( "girl" ): anime focused on public female adolescent, usually with a girl protagonist. Examples: Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Shugo Chara, Candy Candy,Tokyo mew mew.






Seinen ( "man" ): anime focused on adult males, because it contains high level of violence, gore, sexual scenes. Examples: Speed Grapher, Hellsing Ultimate", berserk, MONSTER and Elfen Lied.



Josei (women): Encourage the target audience as young adult women. Where it covers the dramatic genres or counts in the life, also on sex from a woman's point of view. Examples: Nana
